Chess Books

There are plenty of great chess books out there. Some are better than others and it depends on what you're looking for in a book.

Here you will have an opportunity to let us all know about your favorite book or books. Which ones you believe are exceptional and will help others improve there enjoyment of our beloved game.

I will start by saying my favorite books of all time are both classical books. Capablanca's Hundred Best Games Of Chess: Masterpieces by the Mozart of the Chessboard and Masters of the Chessboard by Richard Reti. Both books make playing the game of chess easy to understand and will help improve anyone's game. Before I play in a tournament, I always play over all 100 games of Capablanca.

Don't just believe you have to share classical books with us. There are great modern books being published everyday. So, with that said, Let's get to sharing. There is a form below. Chess books can also be found here.

chess books for kids

Books for Kids - what better way for your child to get started in chess than with a book designed especially for kids? Start your child today on a lifetime of chess enjoyment! ChessCentral has selected the best books available for kids at their age of development.

Chess Fundamentals

Capablanca was a World Chess Champion and one of the greatest players in chess history, yet he wrote very little about the game. Chess Fundamentals, though normally for the beginning player, contains valuable insights that will benefit players at all levels of understanding, including masters. Capablanca explains:

* How to obtain and nurture a passed pawn * How to get and keep the initiative * Cardinal rules for rook and pawn endings * How to attack using knight as the main force * How to cut off enemy pieces

Chess Fundamentals is one of the jewels of chess literature.

Morphy's Games of Chess

Morphy's Games of Chess by Philip Sergeant was, for many players, their first chess book. Certainly in the 85 years since its appearance this classic has inspired thousands to take up our royal game, with its timeless story of fame and tragedy. Now this wonderful book is available once more, in its entirety and better than ever! Paul Morphy was arguably the greatest player who ever lived, and here is the complete record of his amazing career - thoroughly re-edited for the readers of today.

Here’s what you get with Morphy’s Games of Chess:

* Over 300 games, selected and annotated by Sergeant* Morphy’s complete biography* 14 text documents with over 10 photos & drawings* Theme keys and countless "links" for easy use* Supplemental database of Morphy’s remaining games* Much more! Morphy's Games of Chess

Chess for Rookies

Chess for Rookies is a fun-to-read, leisurely, yet well-paced guide. Assuming no prior knowledge of the game, International Master and author Craig Pritchett takes the beginner on a journey through the crucial basics.

Mixing instruction and good humor, this book is an ideal way to learn how to play and win at chess.

* Learn about the chessboard and how the pieces move * Grasp the relative strengths of the chessboard forces * Master basic chess tactics and strategies * Get on top of trickier ideas such as castling and en passant * Realize when to attack or defend * Develop your opening, middle-game and endgame skills * Learn how to use your computer to enhance skills * Discover where best to play and enjoy chess

And after all that, be ready to play, win and enjoy! View this book.

How to Win at Chess - Quickly! E-book for Download

Mistakes are often made early in the game at every level of chess, but the key is to recognize these mistakes when they happen and use them to your advantage . Grandmaster Simon Williams talks about this in this book. Using instruction and games in which one side wins quickly, he explains all the typical mistakes players make in the opening and early middlegame, how you should take advantage of them, and how not to fall into similar traps.
