About Chess Sets and More is an inspiration brought about by playing chess for years and the joy of playing with my children.

I've been an advid follower of chess, a player for more than 30 years, and a current member of the United States Chess Federation. I've played thousands of games. These games have consisted of tournament games, casual games, online games, computer games, and the study of master games. I am also an Affiliate member of ChessCentral.

I've taught all my children (Tina, Tashia, Michael, Jelani) to play the game at a very young age. My daughter Tina even competed in a Chess Tournament at our local YMCA when she was 13 and recieved the second place prize. I was very proud of her that day.

Jelani, my youngest, could name and place all the pieces on the board when he was two years old. Tashia and Michael could also play the game well. Sorry to say, my children's enthusiasm for the game did not continue like their dad's, but the knowledge of the game is still with them.

With the help of Site Build It, I am able to try and give something back to the game I love. In a way, I think my chess life is a bit like the great American chess master Frank Marshall because, "I don't think there has been a day when I haven't played at least one game of chess". I love the game!

My Life As A Chess Player

Oh the joy of being a chess player. I have been a chess player for over 30 years and have never once regretted taken up this royal game. Chess has been a part of my life and will always be. I have spent thousands of countless hours trying to perfect the knowledge and initiative to play this centuries old game.

I was not introduced to this game. As a matter of fact, I stumbled upon it as a mere child of 14. It was study hall time for me at my local high school and we were meeting in the cafeteria. Myself and a few friends were sitting together and we were getting ready to get to the task of studying, when I noticed a group of people on the opposite side of the cafeteria immersed into what I thought was studying. Well,in fact, it was studying, but not the kind of studying that we were there for.

It seems one of the teachers, who was also known as a chess coach, had this group of students meet in the cafeteria for some serious chess studying. I had heard of the game, but I had never really seen it played. They seemed so intense over there with their eyes piercing this board setup that to me seemed every bit like a checker board. Now checkers, I was use to playing and the pieces on this board did not seem anything at all like checker pieces.

I felt it would not be the right thing to do by interrupting these students who were so engrossed in their precious art. I took a few minutes to look at the way they were moving these strange looking pieces. Talk about being totally lost. I did not have the slightest idea what was going on. I decided at that moment to walk away from this and look into it a bit further after school was over.

Once school had ended for the day, I took it upon myself to visit the local library. I wanted to locate anything I could on this exciting game of chess. There were not many chess books at the library, but I did happen to find some that showed how to go about playing this game. I checked out a couple and took them home. The next day, I went to the store and found a cheap plastic chess set and went home to start my chess studies. I have been hooked on the game ever since.

Over time, I have attended chess tournaments and have taught my kids a bit about the royal game. I play online. I play at ChessWorld and the link to site can be found on the Chess Links page on this site. I play under the name Kevin Penny and hope to have an enjoyable game with any of my Chess Sets and More visitors. One other thing, my chess strength is in the 1800 range.

Now 1800, might be a good rating for a chess player, but maintaining it has been a chore for me. Most of my chess experience has come from book knowledge. I've never had a chess coach and that makes my accomplishments in chess all the more appreciative. In a few chess games, i have even beat a few masters. Not bad for a player who has never had a chess coach.

My friend, who's rating hovers around the 2000 range, and I, use to attend tournaments together. We still find time to play an occasional game and he submits articles for Chess Sets and More. Our dedication to our jobs is our priority right now. Chess is still an important part of our lives, but since we do not earn a living at chess, the job must come first.

As far as my chess style goes, I enjoy playing strategic games. My favorite player is Jose Capablanca.You could say, I'm mainly a d4 chess player with the white pieces and I play the Caro-Kann as my black defense. I do have other openings that I play, but these are my favorite.

I think one day, I would like to play on one of those Giant Chess Sets. I've played with downloaded pc chess games, table top chess computers, even Chesster the talking chess computer. He kinda got annoying after a while and i would have to shut him down. A small sized Novag Solo was my first chess computer.

I will continue to play and promote chess until I am no longer able to. Chess lives in my life, now and forever.
